The earliest versions of the myth of Pandora pinned the fatal error of judgement on Pandora's husband, the titan Epimetheus, brother of Prometheus, and dubious beneficiary of the sole gift of hindsight. Hesiod and others after him, it seems, thought fit to recast the story to frame the usual suspect.

The box in question was more like a vessel, a pithos --a storage jar or urn. Mysteriously, Epimethius was given a key to it --though jars don't typically have keyholes... unless the jar itself was the keyhole, and the key represented some other tool. Ultimately, the union of these yonic and phallic shaped objects released misery on the world. Yet the myth contains some hope, as hope itself remained in the vessel --hope that those who replace us might do better.
